How Movies Shape Our Society

Everybody enjoys watching movies, be it at home or at the cinema. There is something about movies that leaves us wanting more. Some motion pictures represent real life situations, and we can easily relate to them.

Survivor Redemption Island Season Recap

Set in Nicaragua yet again, the show introduced two new twists to the game. The first was the introduction of Redemption Island, a place those who get voted out must go where they will get shots at re-entering the game as they had to duel the next person voted out, and so on. The next twist was what came off the helicopter after both teams met on the beach thinking they were starting the game as is. Off of one helicopter was one of the most popular Survivor contestants ever to play the game in Boston Rob Mariano, and the second helicopter revealed one of the biggest “villains” in the games history, Russell Hantz. Both players were set to re-join the game and given yet another chance to win it all (third time for Russell, fourth for Rob).

Dhobi Ghat Movie Review: Ghar Ke Na Ghat Ke

Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghat is the story of four Mumbai based characters who, while dealing with personal demons end up crisscrossing each other’s paths and in the process change forever. Laced with some magical moments Dhobi Ghat might stir the viewer to some extent but on the whole the film comes across as a much manufactured exercise with a slight hint of pretense.

Faces Of The Street – Two Short Films From Minneapolis

Here we present a look at two films that many people will not only not “get,” but may have some difficulty in even seeing for themselves, as they are not widely available for viewing as of yet. Noah Tilsen’s Grinning Faces and Roger Davidson’s Street Hassle are two micro-budget indie shorts, both approximately 30 minutes long, made by two of the more promising filmmakers currently at work in the Twin Cities of my home state, Minnesota.

Hugh Jackman and Robert Downey Jr The Saviors of Comic Book Movies

Before the likes of X-Men and Spider-Man, comic book movies were in a dire place. Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin had effectively destroyed the Batman movie franchise and put other comic book movies on hold. Marvel (and DC eventually) had to go dark to save the comic book movie industry. After Marvel released Blade, which won worldwide acclaim, Marvel decided to push forward with their superhero blockbusters. Starting with X-Men.

Reviewed: Priest [2011]

The only interesting thing with vampire films these days is trying to work out what kind of vampire your going to get and what rules have been thought up to govern them in the world. The vampires of Priest are actual gruesome monsters with sharp claws and fangs which makes a change from the usual humans with slightly bigger incisors. That being said, they do exist as the human-turned-vampire slaves to their true vampire masters.

3 Reason Why Romantic Comedies Rock

These days, it is no secret to movie lovers that romantic comedies are on the come back. In the last 10-15 years we have been blessed with numerous romantic comedies that are absolutely hysterical. You’ve got There’s Something About Mary, Along Cam Polly, Meet The Parents, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I Love You Man, Knocked Up, Jerry Maguire, The Wedding Singer, and many others. These are just a few off the top of my head!

Some Like It Hot – Blu-Ray

Some Like It Hot marks the Blu-ray debut for screen legend Jack Lemmon and illustrious writer/director Billy Wilder, this was the first in a 7 film partnership and I anticipate 20th Century Fox shall be releasing the other Mirisch Company titles that they’ve recently acquired from struggling MGM Studios including The Apartment, Irma La Douce, The Fortune Cookie and Avanti! which I will review as soon as they become available. I said in my previous Jack Lemmon article that Some Like It Hot was a touchstone film for me when I first saw it.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman and Jaimie Alexander?

After the astonishing amount of views I received yesterday for my Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow post, I’ve decided to look at which film out of Iron Man 1/2 and Thor have the best success with female characters. If this was based on comics alone, the decision would easily go to the Black Widow from Iron Man, but the movies tell a different story. The Iron Man films have given us two major female characters.

Should Robin Be in The Dark Knight Rises?

It’s a debate that’s existed since Christopher Nolan rebooted Batman back in 2005. Could Robin the Boy Wonder fit in Nolan’s reality bound universe?

Marvel’s Bourne Identity Equals the Winter Soldier

This summer will show the world that Marvel is ready to unleash the true potential of their B-List heroes such as Thor and Captain America on screen. Since popular characters such as Spider-Man and the X-Men have gone stale, Marvel is turning to their lower roster, and it’s working with fantastic results. Last year’s Iron Man 2 already has a sequel in the works, whilst based on it’s hammering box office return, it won’t be long till we see another solo Thor adventure either.

Survivor Continues It’s Season With Another Predictable Blindside

Survivor: Redemption Island has been running for nearly 3 months now, and so far this season has been extremely straightforward with little to no shocking moments, which is unusual for a Survivor season. With only one episode remaining, which airs this Sunday, that is very unlikely to change and this season may go down as one of the least exciting seasons in recent memory, which is saying a lot considering Survivor: Nicaragua was largely regarded a dull season in itself.
