Movie Review – Perfect Sense (2012) (Not Rated)

The wonder of Perfect Sense is that, by exaggerating the notion of sensory compensation, it allows us to bypass the roadblocks of scientific accuracy (or lack thereof) and focus intently on the poignant core of the story. Sensory compensation has by and large been romanticized for the blind, namely in the thinking that the loss of sight would automatically heighten a person’s ability to hear. As a fable, this movie shows not the slightest interest in what new research on that subject suggests. Instead, it confronts us with a scenario that may not be likely or even possible but still has the power to register emotionally.

For Great Movies You Need Great Actors

You cant make a great movie if you don’t choose the right actors to play in it. You can have a big budget and great technology but movies arent all about that. That is why you need great actors to make great movies.

Movie Review – One for the Money (2012) (PG-13)

One for the Money, based on the novel by Janet Evanovich, tells the story of a woman who gets hired as a bounty hunter strictly on the basis that she sold lingerie at a Macy’s in Newark. I know that this movie was intended to be a comedy, but there are some jokes that defy all sense of logic, and this is one of them. Exactly how does dealing with customers at a department store qualify you for tracking down and apprehending fugitives? Are the people of Newark really such hardened criminals? God knows you have to be one tough cookie if you’re in the market for a G-string or teddy.

Movie Review – Big Miracle (2012) (PG)

An international effort to free three gray whales – Bonnet, Crossbeak, and Bone – briefly made headlines in October of 1988. In the Beaufort Sea near the town of Point Barrow, Alaska, an Inuit hunter discovered the whales trapped beneath pack ice; using only chainsaws and water pumps, the hunter and his fellow villagers took it upon themselves to cut through the ice and attempt to lead the whales towards open water. A week later, word had already spread to the remainder of the Inuit community, local biologists, and an Anchorage news station.

Movie Review – Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012) (PG)

This is going to sound crazy, but when I originally saw the trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, I had no idea it was a sequel to 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. Perhaps I would have known this had I been aware of Jules Verne’s novel Mysterious Island, but apart from my days as an English major and a brief binge on Stephen King and J.K. Rowling, I’ve never been much of a reader. I definitely prefer movies; apart from the general absence of exposition, the stories are literally visualized.

Movie Review – Safe House (2012) (R)

It might be a stretch to think of Safe House as a coming of age film, as it’s structured and edited in the same way as an espionage action thriller. True enough, we have car chases, brutal hand-to-hand combat, gunfights, and a plot involving the acquisition and transportation of a secret file, which of course has dangerous international ramifications. But when you narrow in on the lead characters and really focus on their dialogue and actions, certain themes become unavoidable, the transition from innocence to maturity most of all.
